Major changes are coming to when, where, and how we receive donations! Please read on for all the details!
An open letter about used stuff, stewardship, and making a difference!
If you've ever visited one of our stores, then you know that we have a very simple but effective formula:
• The community donates used stuff.
• We sell said used stuff.
• We use the proceeds to do good in our community.
Our team at The Blessing Barn take our role as stewards of this stuff and it's subsequent profit very seriously. Stewardship, as defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary, is the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care. Over the last few months we have taken a hard look at all of our operations and identified some strategic changes we believe will make us more effective. Most of these changes have to do with when, where, and how we receive donations. We are passionate about the stewardship of the items entrusted to us as well as the proceeds we receive from selling them. At this point I'm sure you're thinking just tell us what the changes are already! So without further ado:
1. The Blessing Barn - Milford will become clothing and accessories specialists:
Our Milford donation sorting warehouse will specialize in clothing and accessories. This means that the Milford location will only accept donations of clothing and accessories, effective Monday, November 13th, 2017. A complete list of items accepted is included below this letter.
The Milford warehouse will be open:
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 10am - 4pm
2. The Blessing Barn Home Store - Mendon will have a specialized processing warehouse for all other types of products (complete list included below):
Our Mendon donation sorting warehouse will specialize in processing all other types of donations. We will not be accepting any donations from December 1st, 2017 - January 2nd, 2018 while we revamp our warehouse and of course, celebrate Christmas!
Beginning January 3rd, 2018, the Mendon warehouse will be open:
Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10am - 4pm
3. Furniture Donation Appointments:
We have come to realize that it would be best for our donors, staff, and the overall good of the store for furniture donations to be accepted by appointment only. We will also require a photo of the item to be sent via text or email in advance. As much as we wish we could accept everything that people are willing to donate, we must recognize that we have a finite amount of space in our stores. We have also taken account of the amount of resources we have been spending on the disposal of items that are not saleable due to poor condition. We cannot deny that this is poor stewardship of our employees' time and the organization's finances. Being more careful about what items we accept will inevitably make us better stewards of both our resources and our mission. We hope you agree and you will support us in this change.
4. Appointments are required for 5 or more boxes, bins, or bags of clothing:
In the spirit of effective stewardship, we would love to speak with you before you come with a large load of items. This will help us ensure that we will be able to accept what you are planning to bring, as well as help us to be prepared to receive it.
5. We reserve the right to refuse donations for any reason at any time:
Even typing that phrase made me feel like a big meanie! But as we take a step back and look at our goals of stewardship and our mission to serve this community through the proceeds of the stores, we realize we must reserve this right.
We are so honored to have been a donation destination for so many over the last 15 years. We hope that in reading this (extremely long!) letter you have heard our heart to serve you and people in need at the highest possible level. We want to do everything we do, better. Plain and simple! Thank you for sticking with us through these changes! We'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.
